The audio component of “Surface Noise” is comprised of several layered recordings created by the drawings over the span of a year. Recorded through a handmade contact microphone (a microphone fashioned out of a piezo transducer that picks up the audible vibrations of surfaces), each sound is the actual nib of the pen scratching the paper to conceive the drawing. One of the concepts behind this installation is to point out an inextricable link between drawing and sound; both are systems of mark-making which are completely dependent on one another. The process of drawing cannot exist without making a sound, while these sounds do not exist without the act of drawing.
